Recycling

Being a good steward of what we've been given does not only involve money. It also includes being a good steward of the resources we have on Earth.

We recently received a list in the mail of everything that we can recycle. As usual, I tend to go overboard when I set my sights on a cause. I actually cringe now when I take along prepackaged applesauce for my kids' lunch and don't have a recycling bin to throw away the bottom plastic part. Obviously, I need to learn balance as well. Anyway, you may not realize how much we can recycle these days, so here's a list of what is allowed by most major recycling companies.

The following material is accepted on the curbside recycling program:
  • Pasteboard (cereal boxes, empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls, soda boxes, beer boxes, tissue boxes, gift boxes, pizza boxes, and shoe boxes)
  • Brown paper grocery bags (no wax, no wet strength material, no liners)
  • Corrugated cardboard (flattened and cut down to no larger than 3 ft x 3 ft)
  • Newspaper, supplements, magazines, and catalogs
  • Plastic #1-#7 (#s on bottom of plastic containers) REMOVE ALL LIDS
  • Glass bottles and jars (clear, green, and brown) REMOVE ALL LIDS
  • Aluminum cans
  • Steel cans and tin household containers, such as food cans (Please empty and rinse. It is not necessary to remove labels. Empty aerosol cans are permitted if nozzle is removed.)

The following material is NOT accepted:

  • Plastic bags (Publix has bin at the curb for these)
  • Electronic devices
  • Motor oil or pesticide containers
  • Light bulbs or drinkware
  • Aluminum foil or pie plates
  • Paint or pesticide cans
  • Egg cartons and styrofoam trays (Publix has bin at the curb for these)

Please consider recycling what you don't need anymore. It doesn't cost you anything and it helps preserve the resources we've been entrusted with.

Never hurts to ask...

So, Tom and I met at Panera for a breakfast date after my bike ride this morning instead of our weekly lunch date only to be told they were OUT OF EGGS. Eggs are necessary for an egg sandwich...the ones that are on sale for 10 cents after you purchase one at regular price. So, I asked if they could give us a quiche for 10 cents instead since it was their "mistake". The cashier said they didn't have the button on their computer to make a quiche 10 cents, but that she would let us buy one quiche and get one free instead. If you insist!! Like I said, it never hurts to ask! Thanks Panera!

Anniversary Celebration

Don't forget that Panera is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Florida and passing on great savings to us. This week you can purchase any egg sandwich and receive a second egg sandwich for 10 cents. I've tried them before, after a Saturday morning run of 10 miles with Christie and Brandi and they're a yummy mix of protein and carbs great for recovery after a large workout. Tom and I will be having breakfast there tomorrow after my Thursday morning ride (34 miles). However, if you don't care to exercise like a maniac, they're just plain yummy anyway.

I told you I'd tell you about swagbucks

http://www.swagbucks.com/ is a search engine that offers you the chance to win cool prizes from swagbucks.com every time you search. You earn digital dollars called "Swag Bucks", which can be redeemed for exclusive swagbucks.com merchandise. There are 4 ways to earn swag bucks: search, shop, invite friends, or go green. Once you earn enough swag bucks, you can use them to purchase items from the swag store such as gift certificates to Starbucks, Target, Best Buy, or amazon.com. The search engine is even powered by Google so you don't lose any searching power by using swagbucks.com.

This is what I won for trying a random search.

I am trying to put a banner for swagbucks.com on my blog. However, I'm not all that blog savvy, savvy? If I don't manage to get it on their right away, leave me a comment so I can invite you by email as my friend so I can get credit while you get credit.

Voila by Birds Eye

Voila by Birds Eye is running a couple marketing/advertising campaigns right now that might be of interest to you.

I hardly ever rent movies at Blockbuster anymore (because I rent from RedBox instead), but I will if it's free. Send your husband an email and ask him to go here to send in a picture and short story about why you deserve to be recognized and you will receive a coupon good for one FREE movie rental from Blockbuster! He can even invent one if he needs to.

You can also get a FREE Charlie Brown DVD when you purchase any three (3) bags of Voila or Voila Family Skillets. Just send in your 3 UPC’s and the mail-in form for your choice of one of four great Charlie Brown™ DVDs! Be forewarned, though, if you are my friend, one of your kids MAY be getting this as a Christmas present. Click here for a printable mail-in form and additional details. You can even go to this site to print 2 coupons for $1 off a Voila purchase.

American Eagle is giving away FREE Movie Tickets

American Eagle is running a promotion. It's a little unclear to me what the full story is. My local mall emailed me that you get a free movie ticket just for trying on a pair of jeans.

However, American Eagle emailed me directly (Aren't I special?) and didn't mention the free ticket for trying on a pair of jeans, but it did advertise 2 free tickets if you buy a pair. So, you will just have to test the waters. Or, make a date with me to come try on a pair at MY mall and then we can go to a movie after. O wait! I have kids :).

Ann Taylor Loft has a special club just for teachers

Did you know that Ann Taylor Loft has a club spcifically for educators to obtain savings?

For more information, visit this site. I'm not sure if it applies to homeschooling moms as well, but it's worth checking into.

Do you always check the web for coupon codes before ordering online?

YOU SHOULD! Have you ever heard of the website called Retail Me Not? There are many websites devoted specifically to compiling a database of coupon codes that are primarily good for online shopping. I RARELY pay for shipping on online orders because I can almost always find a coupon code by doing a swagbucks search (Check back another day to see what THAT means.) or by going directly here and searching for a site's coupon code.

For example, an item on sale at Target that we decided to buy was not in stock at our local store. I asked for and received a rain check but it stated that the item was likely to not be restocked. So, we decided to look to see if the sale was at the online store as well. When I found out it was, I searched retailmenot.com for a coupon code and found a code for $5 off $50 purchase. It didn't make shipping free, but reduced it from $10.48 to $5.48 and saves me the hassle of trying to hunt it down all over town and having to drive who knows how far to locate the item.
